Colon and Rectal Surgery

Colon and Rectal Surgery Overview

Colorectal surgery is used to repair or remove part of a damaged colon, rectum, or anus caused by lower digestive tract disease to restore normal bowl function.

Types of colorectal ailments we treat

Types of colorectal ailments we treat include cancer, diverticulitis, inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis, and Crohn’s disease. Removing blockages, repairing tears, or tightening sphincter muscles are the common goals of colorectal surgery.

Other types of colorectal surgery involve creating an opening from the inside of the body to the outside (ostomy) to remove body wastes, such as feces or urine. An ileoanal anastomosis is a new procedure that acts as an artificial rectum by creating an internal reservoir sewn to the anus. Diseases of the intestinal tract and initial cancers are being treated with laparoscopic surgery.

During this surgery, an instrument with a small video camera (laparoscope) is inserted through a small incision in the abdomen. Surgical instruments are inserted through other small incisions, and repairs or resects are made to the intestinal tract. Determining which surgery is suitable for the patient is based on the disease or condition he or she has.
